Atheism does have comfort to offer in the face of death. Among other things, most atheists think that when we're dead, it will be just like it was before we were born -- not painful or bad, and nothing to be frightened of. Pass it on: if we say it enough times to enough people, it may get across.
"it will be just like it was before we were born".
OK, but before we were conceived is better.

I like this analogy.
I have always wondered, though, if the people who are so "afraid" of death are the ones who do not have much going on for them in life. I am much too bothered with things like getting good parking, finding a good hairball remedy for my cat, doing my dissertation, etc etc to be really that worried about what happens after life......
