Parents "make" their children, but they don't have the right to beat, starve, terrorize, neglect, or kill those children.

The horrible thing here is that that this analogy would not have worked when this religion was created, and the bible still say exactly this: You do have the right to kill your children because you made them - they just have to disrespect their creators and you can, and should, stone them to death.

You're still mad at God for the earthquake in Hati, aren't you?

llewelly,

This particular example may have been chosen by Greta because of recent events, but that's a very different claim. It is a bit hard to be angry at something that doesn't exist. You know, like being angry at Hades or Thanatos. However, it is possible to be annoyed at believers who when faced with this sort of problem do respond with this sort of claim that essentially amounts to some form of might-makes-right.

To see a particularly sickening example see Pat Robertson's recent comments: http://scienceblogs.com/gregladen/2010/01/this_is_why_i_prefer_secular_a.php

Apparently Robertson thinks that Haiti is suffering because they practice Voodoo. See, according to Roberton, Voodoo is devil worship that started because the Hatians made a deal with the devil to get the French out. So God is entitled to punish their descendants. Or something like that. See how this is annoying?

greta, if i may go off topic, i thought you would enjoy this:

The Center for Inquiry is accepting disaster-relief donations through its S.H.A.R.E. program to support those providing care to the survivors of the 7.0 earthquake that struck Jan. 12 near the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

All donations—100 percent with no operating costs retained—will be sent directly to the secular aid group Doctors Without Borders, which suffered the loss of all three of its medical facilities and is working against difficulties to provide the basics of first-aid care and stabilization.

The needs of those who’ve lost their family members, their homes, and their livelihoods will be very great. Your assistance will make a huge difference for the victims of this tragic disaster. Please join us and other humanists and skeptics as we help those in need in this time of crisis.

A contribution of any amount would be greatly appreciated by everyone at the Center for Inquiry. Thank you for your continued support of our work, and please consider a donation to S.H.A.R.E. in honor of those in Haiti who need help.

Please make your contribution to S.H.A.R.E. directly by clicking here. All funds sent to S.H.A.R.E. are tax exempt in the United States. http://ga1.org/ct/g1111111gRvM

I've always found the "god created you so you can't critize him" hilarious especially when the supposed "patriarchs" critized God. Abraham, almost child killer that he was, was up in God's face about how stupid it was to kill the innocent in Sodom with the "evil" people.

Oh, and as for God causing anything in Haiti, I do love how Patty's claim sure shoots any claim of "free will" by other Christians down the tubes, if one can be damned for something you didn't do. Being an atheist, I don't have to make up disgusting things like Patty does so I can cling to my beliefs no matter what.
