The Perky Skeptic

I love different authors' approaches to sex writing. It's always very enlightening about the author's own take on sex.

A great friend gave me an autographed copy of Dr. Ruth Westheimer's Sex For Dummies. I really enjoyed it, but it was interesting reading-- she was evangelical for blowjobs and preaches it as if to older ladies whose generation was not schooled in the "oral comes standard" philosophy. The whole topic has a cute, "Come on, gals, it's not that bad! Some people even enjoy it!" kind of air. It cracked me up to imagine my grandmother reading those passages!

I have rarely opened a book with so much excitement and anticipation. And I have rarely closed it with so much frustration at the opportunity it missed.

Funny, that's how I felt about Roach's last book, Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife. The "science" in that book is sorely lacking, and borders on pseudoscience and mythology.

Reincarnation? Seriously?

I will skip this one. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.

I couldn't get through this book - I really wanted to like it, but her attitude towards sex seemed immature and judgmental. But maybe I was biased since the two previous books I had read were "America Unzipped" (Brian Alexander) and "Pornology" (Ayn Carrillo-Gailey) - both of those books were by authors who described themselves as coming from sexually repressed backgrounds, but then ended up writing entertaining books about sex that weren't judgmental.
