I can't be bothered to look it up, but thre's a good quote to the effect of 'a thousand pairs of hands praying have less effect than one pair working'.

When I was a child, I used to pray to God for a bicycle. Then I
realized that God doesn't work in that way - so I stole a bicycle
and prayed for forgiveness.

To be fair, I think it's necessary context to note that Frederick Douglass was an ordained minister and seems to have remained fairly religious throughout, at least as far as I can tell from Wikipedia. It's a nice quote, but it's not an endorsement of atheism.

Wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair and all the terrible things that happen to us, come because actually deserve them?
So, now I take comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the Universe” - Marcus Cole

Douglass also said that he was inspired to escape by a hymn:
"Run to Jesus,
Shun the danger.
I don't expect to stay much longer here."
He still has a good point. Even many believers will admit that God helps those who help themselves... which from an atheists point of view means we didn't need God's help in the first place.

I think that Atheism is derived from human natures cravings for conflict. You don't hear people creating a title for there dislike or disagreement of anything that there is no passion behind the contrary position. Its almost a mathematic equation balancing itself out on both sides of the equal sign...
Example: I like chocolate ice cream (VS) I like vanilla ice cream would be something like 1 (VS) -1 no big deal. Put the numbers together and you get 0, a balance. You don't go around downing or doubting that other people like the opposing flavor for such and such reason because the numbers are small and not worth the time.
But
There is a God (VS) there is no God would be like (19(10+3)(32/4))-(7.25*8) VS (87-3(9+16)(3(17-2)+(28/2))+12) Now there is some complexity that is worth your time to fight with.
The more Passionate one side is, the more passionate the opposing side becomes to fill the balance. Thus adding and fueling the conflict. Same thing with sports. Its like there is a want for acceptance and attention. Battling each other actually helps one another fight harder for there side.
The human mind is an odd thing with an insatiable desire for destruction. We will be our own demise.
